A Brutally Honest Review of Justin Bieber’s Purpose Deluxe Edition (Track by Track) + Videos from Purpose: The Movement

Let’s be honest, I have never been a “Belieber”. However, I’ve  heard a little too much about Justin Bieber’s new album, Purpose, which dropped on Friday, November 13th. (Doesn’t he know Friday, the 13th is unlucky?!) So, I had to check it out. Here is a track by track explanation of my feelings while listening to Purpose.   P.S. You can listen to the entire album at the end of the post!

01.   Mark My Words

First things first this is about Selena Gomez. I had to listen to this two minute song a few times to fully understand its meaning. “Mark my words, that’s all have”, sings Bieber, and it’s literally most of the song. However, he sings some beautiful things that every girl would want to hear.  (You’re the only reason why, I don’t want to live a lie.) This is definitely not worth being a single, it’s slow and short. This is more like an intro.  Still a sweet gesture Bieber, get your shit together with this girl!

02.   I’ll Show You

Okay, by the second song I’m easing up a little bit and starting to put my guard down.  Bieber talking about only being human is somewhat surprising, yet somewhat awesome. (He comes off a little douchey to me..) We all know what it’s like be young and trying to figure out what to do under tons of pressure, but fortunately our lives are not on the cover of every magazine. Growing up is already tough, imagine growing up with the whole world watching.  I bet it’s tough. There is a lot of heart in this song, but it’s still not a singleworthy.

03.   What Do You Mean?

This one is about Selena, too. What Do You Mean? is Justin’s first ever No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. This is one of those songs which gets overplayed on the radio, but you know what? I DON’T CARE. I love this song! It makes me want to dance and I can totally relate to it! We all know someone (or ourselves) who says one thing and wants something completely different. (Clearly Selena is one of us!) This is already a single, but this one totally gets our approval!

04.   Sorry

Who knew there could be a song better than What Do You Mean? on this album! After one listen, I already know the words and I’m totally ready to jam out to it! It’s never too late to say I’m Sorry, Biebs! I think he just released this one as a single, I can’t wait until this hits No. 1 as well! Seriously, in love with this song. It’s so insanely catchy.

05.   Love Yourself

This is one big F YOU.  You tell her Biebs! I don’t think this one is about Selena. Here’s what I learned: Basically some chick has been sing his name to get into clubs and his mom is not a big fan of her. She also is somewhat a narcissist. He was in love with her. Honestly, I thought a song called Love Yourself would be somewhat positive about loving yourself! I expected more out of this track.

06.   Company

I’m in love with this song! I am almost positive this will be his next single. I can dance to this song and frankly, it’s all about 20-something year old’s relationships. The lyrics relate to my personal life a little too much. “You ain't gotta be my lover, for me to call you baby,” doesn’t this sound very much like “Netflix & Chill”? Can your love life relate to this? I love it and I cannot wait to hear this all over the airways!

07.   No Pressure

This is so much slower than Company, it really takes me on an emotional roller coaster. Basically he is trying to win someone back and he is patiently waiting for them, without any pressure. Good song, but maybe not the best place on the track list. Big Sean’s part is so good! He even reference’s Empire! 7/10, nothing special.

08.   No Sense

Similar to No Pressure this is a slow song, but also pretty sexy. Putting No Sense  immediately after No Pressure doesn’t really make sense. If it went from Company to No Sense to No Pressure it would actually tell a story. In this song, Biebs describes everything he does/can do, but if you (yes, you!) aren’t it, then why bother. Whomever this song is about (probably Selena), should be very flattered.  It’s a good song, there are some catchy lyrics, but I’m not in love with it. (Company set some high standards.)  Travis Scott totally killed, by the way.

09.   The Feeling

This song. I love it, but I also hate it. I love the lyrics because I can relate to it. Being a young adult, I have always looked at my significant other and tried to figure out if I am in love with them or just the feeling of being in love. I have yet to figure it out and I am sure I am not the only going through these thoughts. The lyrics describe exactly that. However, Halsey’s voice does not work for this song. It’s such a mature topic for Beiber to be singing about, but Halsey’s voice sounds like a 12 year old on this song and it’s totally ruining this beautiful song for me. Sorry Halsey, I like your other songs though!

10.   Life Is Worth Living

The placement of this song is also confusing. I like the message behind it, but this album seems very confusing. There is no common message, half of it is about a girl, and the other half is about us. This is a rainy Sunday evening kind of song. It has actually left me a little depressed. I hope there is a happy song after this one.

11.   Where Are U Now

I’ll be honest; when this song first came out I was not a fan. Maybe it’s because the previous song made feel sad, but this song is definitely growing on me. I like the beats a lot and think EDM music suits him. Clearly this song is also about Selena, in the official music video he literally wrote “Where R U Now Selena?” I can see myself jamming to this, just which there were more lyrics to go along with the sick beat. Props to Skrillex & Diplo, too!

12.   Children

My first thoughts go back to Kanye screaming “Listen to the kids bruh” at the MTV VMA’s. I really hope this song is nothing like that. Deep breath. Pressing play now.  Wow. This song is GREAT! Lyrics are amazing, very inspiring, and the beats are amazing. I think EDM is Justin Bieber’s next (errr... current?) calling, seriously. I wonder if he wrote this song. I am so impressed. Do yourself a favor and listen to this one.

13.   Purpose

Time for the title track. It’s really slow, but the piano makes it beautiful. Actually, on second thought, the meaning behind this is beautiful. It seems like Bieber lost himself for a while, but in God’s hands he has found his purpose. I like this path he is on, I hope doesn’t go back to being a complete prick.

14.   Been You

I like this song, it’s cute. The only thing is – it kind of makes me think of a song a boy band would record. This is practically a wish to go back in time, but hey, who doesn’t wish they could do that and fix their mistakes?

15.   Get Used To It

Awwww. I’m literally gushing. I know this song is not about me, but damn, I wish someone would write a song this sweet about me. I could see this one being dropped as a single on Valentine’s Day. If you are in a lovey dovey mood, listen to this!

16.   We Are

Wait, whose birthday is it?! This song is about a relationship. He is all about this girl and it seems like he is trying to bring reassurance to her about this relationship. He is trying to tell her not to worry about having him, because she already does. Cute song, it’s alright.

17.   Trust

He is pretty much convincing the girl to be in love with him. (Most of the album is kind of like this.) “If I believe in love, and you believe in love, then we can be in love, somehow” – it’s actually not all that easy. This is an easy song to listen to, it’s not amazing.

18.   All In

I don’t like the way he sings this song. It sounds like he is dragging out his words. The meaning of this song, on the other hand, is one of my favorites on this album. Go where your passions are! I also love that he is trying to motivate and encourage his fans. The outro is pretty awesome, as well.

The Final Verdict: This album has so many hits (Children, Company, Sorry, What Do You Mean?), but it also has a few songs that don’t really hit the bill. Fifty percent of this album sounds like a party album, the other fifty percent sounds very humble and encouraging. It almost seems like Justin tried to please everyone and I don’t really agree with that. I love that he experimented with EDM music. He really proved that he is a real artist, by being someone who steps out of their comfort zone and experiments with sound. This is the first Bieber album I have ever listened to and I’ll probably listen to the next one.
