It’s that time of the year again ladies, time to show off your winter best to your family and friends. Some people you may see every day, some you may have not seen in years, some you don’t even know because someone always brings a date. No matter who will be there, we feel this over whelming urge to look runway ready. We know we will probably regret those jeans that hug every curve later, but we just don’t care. Why?
Well there are so many reasons we could feel the urge to style our hair, put on Michelle Phan worthy make up, and dress like Tim Gunn is our personal shopper. You would think when year after year we pledge to wear looser pants that we would stop wearing those “make your butt look amazing” jeans that are just a little too snug for big meals. Nope, we keep doing it to ourselves. We choose fabulous over comfort every year.
You walk in the door and you smell the calorie laden food calling your name, and then you see them, the women. Every one of them dressed to the nines. Their leather boots, skinny leg jeans, and their faces flawless and pore free. Suddenly you feel under dressed, and it feels like the spot light is on you. Your family should just install a runway at this point, as the house almost becomes a stage for you to show off your knock out look.
You check your make up one last time, and then you’re up. You start walking, back straight, and with your biggest smile and start saying hello and try to keep yourself looking as amazing though all the cheek kisses as you did when you walked out the door today. You finally made it, you’ve greeted everyone and you rocked it like Heidi Klum through it all. Your smile blooms with the complements on how you look amazing, and the always appreciated comment that you look like you’ve lost weight. You can finally begin to enjoy yourself and relax.
This may possibly be the one of the multiple reasons we dress like we do during this holiday season, to show our family the happiness we feel on the inside, on the outside. If you think about it, when you are unhappy you rarely feel like putting much effort into your looks. On these days though, when you are surrounded by love, surrounded by joy, you just want to express it. You just want to show off everything that makes you happy, and for many women, confidence makes us happy and we are most confident when we look our best.
At the end of the day, no matter who won best outfit: holiday edition (I know it was you, you gorgeous thing you), you got to spend the day with your family. And that one person no one knows, because your cousin’s been dating them for like a week.
There is so much to be thankful for this holiday season, especially with so much violence in the world. Let’s take the time to look around at our beautiful families and appreciate every single one of them. The ones who are trying to outdo you, the ones who can barely remember your name, the ones who tell you that you should eat more. See the special-ness in every single one of them, and take joy in the chaos. Happy Holidays!

Flicker in a Willow is a blog where stuff gets real. We get really blunt, and sometimes a little rude. I say what your thinking a lot of the time. We talk about a lot that goes along with being a 20 something mother, wife, and the struggles of it all.
